Oregon tides: common questions

What time is high tide in Oregon today?

High tide arrives at a different time at each station. Astoria reaches 8.71 ft at 3:11 pm; Astoria (Port Docks) reaches 8.21 ft at 3:03 pm; Astoria (Youngs Bay) reaches 8.8 ft at 2:58 pm. The table above lists the next high and the next low for all 47 Oregon stations.

Where is the biggest tidal range in Oregon?

Cathcart Landing, Youngs River, where high and low water differ by 9.7 ft today. The smallest of the 47 Oregon stations with a range today is Rocky Point at 2.9 ft. Range varies along a coast because the shape of a bay or estuary amplifies or damps the same ocean tide.

Is there a minus tide in Oregon today?

Yes, at Astoria, Astoria (Port Docks), Astoria (Youngs Bay) and 40 others. The lowest is -0.7 ft at 10:05 pm. A minus tide is water below mean lower low water, the zero point for US predictions, and it exposes ground that is normally covered.

Are Oregon tides semidiurnal or diurnal?

All 47 Oregon stations here are mixed semidiurnal, which means two highs and two lows a day, of noticeably different sizes. Each station page classifies itself from its own predictions rather than from a regional rule, because the pattern changes along a single coast.

How accurate are these Oregon tide predictions?

NOAA states roughly ten minutes on timing and half a foot on height for a reference station in ordinary weather. 26 of the 47 stations here are reference stations; the rest are subordinate, with times and heights derived from one by a published offset, so expect a little more spread. Weather is the bigger factor either way. A storm surge or a strong onshore wind can raise real water well above the prediction, which is astronomy only.
